Paragraph Attributes

A paragraph is a range of text followed by a paragraph return. The appearance of a paragraph is dependent on its paragraph attributes. The most common paragraph attributes are indents, tabs, alignment and leading.

PageStream does not force you to apply paragraph attributes to paragraphs only; you can apply different paragraph attributes to ranges of characters within a paragraph.

Some paragraph attributes take effect only when applied to the first character in a paragraph. To avoid confusion, apply paragraph attributes to entire paragraphs. (Triple click in a paragraph to select it.)

To change paragraph attributes for selected paragraphs: Select the paragraphs to change with the Text tool. Choose the appropriate Type menu command or select its equivalent from the Paragraph view of the Edit palette.

If you want to apply paragraph attributes to separate paragraphs, you should consider using paragraph styles to save time.

To change the attributes for all text formatted with a paragraph style: Hold down Shift while choosing a style from the Paragraph Styles submenu in the Type menu to display the Paragraph Style dialog box. Modify the attributes and click OK. All text formatted with that style will change automatically.

MacOS Users: Hold down Shift prior to pressing the mouse button.

Related Tips

To change the attributes of a dot leader (filled tab), select the dot leader after it is entered as you would any other text, and then use the Edit palette or any of the Type menu commands to change its attributes.

You can force justify text in PageStream by setting the Last Line Flush Zone to be greater than the column width. This option can be set with Tracking from the Type menu. Forced justification justifies every line in a paragraph, including the last line.

You can left align some text and right align other text on the same line with a right indent tab. Enter the left aligned text, press Tab while holding down Shift, and then type the right aligned text. Shift Tab will insert a right indent tab and will force the following text to be right aligned.

You can also use this with a center aligned tab to make text left, center and right aligned on one line. Enter the left text, press Tab, enter the center text, press Shift Tab and then enter the right text. Then select the text and create a center aligned tabstop at the center of the column width.

Dot leader: A row of dots connecting columns of information. i.e., tables of contents (sections and page numbers), menus (items and prices).

Don't indent the first paragraph after a large headline. First-line indents can be used for new paragraphs within an article, but need not be used for a paragraph following a headline.
