This works, but I find the screen proportions very disconcerting. My
horizontal "inches" are 37mm and my vertical "inches" are 19mm. The
results of my first attempt at placing pictures and printing last night,
trying to reduce the size to get two side-by-side on the page by
"eyeballing," got poor results.

This morning I thought maybe PageStream5, where vertical measure and
horizontal measure are identical (one "inch" was 19mm when I expanded the
window) might work better. But clicking "Place" after selecting a photo
hung the computer.

After rebooting the A1, trying to load PageStream4 got a DSI every time I
warm rebooted OS4. I finally had to re-Unarc and reinstall.

As far as printing a bunch of photos on one page is concerned, it's OK now.
I just use the sizing thing at the bottom of the page to set them 3.75" x
2.5", but where I used to get a light-colored background with blue lines
indicating margins, now it is solid blue. And if I type text in, the text
is blue too, making it VERY hard (namely impossible) to see.

I found, in user-startup, an assign of SoftLogik to "PageStream:SoftLogik."
I didn't put that there, so it must be the result of one of my installs, of
which I have done three: PageStream5 once, and PageStream4 twice. There
was no "PageStream:" so I assigned it to PageStream4.

Next problem: No SoftLogik drawer in PageStream4:. There is one in
PageStream5, so I reassigned PageStream to PageStream5. PageStream4
apparently doesn't like the SoftLogik drawer contents in PageStream5, so I
ended up not assigning it in User-Startup but just waiting for the "Assign"
requester, and assigning SoftLogik to PageStream4: No complaints, but I
still have that solid blue window.

I'm going to double-post this and maybe double my chances of getting some
help.

I assign PageStream, PageStream3 and PageStream4 to where PageStream4
is installed. AIUI, PageStream5 needs no assigns. I over assign as I
have some old documents and perhaps scripts for older versions. The
assign directs all as desired.

The softlogik drawer is important. It has all the character sets,
the screen fonts, etc. Mine has ten (10) sub-drawers, including
printing. I am surprised that PS will work without it.

The SoftLogik drawer should be put there by install.

Hope this is helpful. Good Luck getting those photos printed as you
like.

I remember seeing a PageStream3 assign before. I thought, "Huh?" But now
it's gone, and I don't recall touching it. I don't remember what the
assignment was, so I couldn't put it back if I wanted to.

As seems to happen embarrassingly frequently, I spend an hour or two trying
to fix something, give up, write for help, and then think of something else
to try. This time I again Unarced PgS4, to RAM:, ran it from RAM:, and the
window was the way it should be--white, with blue margin lines. And there
was a SoftLogik drawer too. So I just copied everything from RAM, except
the executive itself (in the hopes that that way I wouldn't need to put my
secret words in again), and now it comes up properly from the PageStream4
drawer. Except, of course, for the horizontal/vertical ratio, which seems
uncorrectible.

The SoftLogik drawer must have been there earlier. The first thing I did on
reinstallation was move all those cset win#? files to a sub-drawer that had
a name that sounded like it meant "taken out of service." Somehow I must
have accidentally deleted the SoftLogik drawer after I did that!

The subdrawer didn't come up in the RAM: version, so I made a new one, and
moved the offending files there.

I took a look at the screen-setting options, but all the screens available
were wider than tall, so I don't see how they could help, although I may
try some anyway.

The photos came out fine, even lining them up in that solid blue window. It
was just text I was worried about.

Thanks for the quick response. I'm going through the manual bit by bit, but
I imagine I'll come crying for help again.

Open "File -> Preferences... -> Measurment" and set

Horizontal = Inches
Vertical = Same as horizontal

then do SAVE and you'll not be bothered with mm anymore! Smile

Eyeballing should give good results. Zoom in if necessary for higher accuracy on
placement.

I'm not using version 5, so I cannot confirm, and from your comments below it
appears you were able to 'Place' photos after all.

PITA! If you intend to use both PageStream4 and PageStream5, but NOT at the same
time, then you must be careful with the assignments for 'PageStream:',
'PageStream3:' etc. For example, say that PageStream4 is your basic workhorse,
then in 'Sys:User-Startup' use the ASSIGN statements that are appropriate for
PageStream4. Then, on bootup, PageStream4 is ready to be called.

However, when you want to switch over to PageStream5, WITHOUT rebooting, then
you need a little AmigaDos script which simply consists of the assigns for
PageStream5. When ready to run PageStream5, run the AmigaDos script first and
THEN call out PageStream5. Don't try and run PageStream4 and PageStream5 at the
same time, since the 'assigns' will be wrong for at least one.

Of course, if you now want to return to PageStream4 and abandon PageStream5
(without rebooting), then you need an AmigaDos script which will reset the
assignment statements that are appropriate for PageStream4.

There is undoubtedly a smarter way to achieve this, but the above has worked for
me when experimenting with beta versions of PageStream5.

Yes, resize them as appropriate after loading.

Don't understand the first sentence! Not sure what's going on, but look in

File -> Preferences... -> View

to check if some setting therein is out of whack.

For text colour, highlight the text you want recoloured and do

++ select "Type -> Line&Fill... -> Fill" (i.e., go to the 'Fill' tab)
++ in the popup set
Color = black
Filled = checkmarked (active)
++ exit with OK button

The text that you highlighted should now be coloured Black.

In Sys:User-Startup I have

;BEGIN PageStream
Assign PageStream: "WorkRazzageStream"
Assign PageStream3: "WorkRazzageStream"
Assign PageStream4: "WorkRazzageStream"
Assign SoftLogik: "PageStream:SoftLogik"
Assign Fonts: "PageStream:SoftLogik/Fonts" ADD
;END PageStream

and I guess you should have something like that, ALTHOUGH, for version 5,
perhaps you do not need the assigns for 'PageStream3:' and 'PageStream4:' --
not sure and cannot recall. Of course, you will have to replace

"WorkRazzageStream"

with whatever path is appropriate for you setup. I'm fairly confident that you
NEED the 'Softlogik;" assign as well as the "Assign Fonts:" line.

BM> Next problem: No SoftLogik drawer in PageStream4:.

That should be impossible! The directory 'SoftLogik' is huge in any version of
PageStream that I've encountered. Here, for Pagestream 4.1.5.6, the SoftLogik
guy takes up 13 MB and contains about 577 files. Did you possiblly drag (within
your PageStream4 setup) the SoftLogik drawer into another directory, by
accident? Use the FIND tool to discover where all your SoftLogik drawers are
located.

I assume that PageStream4 and PageStream5 are in separate directories! They
should be. Using the SoftLogik drawer that came with PageStream5 as a
substitute for the original SoftLogik in PageStream4 sounds like *trouble* to
me.
Remember PageStream5 for the Amiga is still in beta. On the other hand, they
might be identical. Cannot check at the moment.

The PageStream manual, like the program always a work in progress, is
the War and Peace of manuals. You will need plenty of time to master
even parts of it. Deron is one heck of a programmer and the manual is
a monument to his patience, perserverance and talent.
