I recall seeing the first early PS5_Amiga release and thinking it
looked like you were trying to program MUI the same way you would
gadtools, calculating every coordinate yourself and "shoehorning"
buttons, etc, into those, whereas a great part of the whole point of
MUI is that you "just" hand it a basic idea of how to arrange the GUI
and leave it to the layout engine to figure out the numbers. Not being
a developer myself, I guess that trying to force MUI to another
behaviour than what it's made for, might make for quite the headache.

I don't know how off I was in getting that impression, but it does make
sense that you would have to do it that way, given that Pagestream has
to follow the same GUI style and API, through whatever abstraction
layer you have probably constructed, across every platform it is
released for -- a totally different GUI for each would be a nightmare
in maintainence and consistency.
